Understanding Anaesthesia-Free Dental Cleaning: The Facts Behind the Procedure

It has recently come to the attention that some veterinary clinics are offering Anaesthesia-Free Dental procedures, advertising them as an alternative to traditional dental care. But you need to know: it can be dangerous for your pet. Animal Doctors International Veterinary Hospital (ADI) are concerned about this development and feel it is ADI’s responsibility to share an important statement on Anaesthesia-Free Dentistry from veterinary dental specialists.

While some pet parents may be concerned about the risks of anaesthesia, the truth is that appropriately planned anaesthesia is far safer than anaesthesia-free dental procedures—even in geriatric patients! Did you know that even if your pet’s teeth appear clean on the outside, hidden dental problems could still be lurking beneath the gum line? In fact, most dental disease occurs below the gum line and can easily go unnoticed without a thorough oral examination.

Your pet may have clean crowns but still suffer from unresolved dental issues that could lead to pain, trauma, broken teeth, or even a broken jaw. Unfortunately, ADI have encountered all of these situations, and ADI are truly heartbreaking.

An important fact to note is that local anaesthesia in the oral cavity of an animal is not possible to be administered without prior general anesthesia. Some early oral cancers can only be detected when the pet is under chemical restraint. Additionally, many oral diseases can only be diagnosed through X-ray examination, which is only possible when the pet is fully anaesthetised.

Modern anaesthetic procedures, combined with appropriate monitoring and support, carry very low risks. In fact, the benefits of effective dental and periodontal treatment far outweigh the risks associated with anaesthesia.

Following the statement issued with the agreement of: EVDC (European Veterinary Dental College), EVDS (European Veterinary Dental Society), BVDA (British Veterinary Dental Association), and FECAVA (Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations), anaesthesia-free dental procedures:

👉 Cannot allow a full oral examination to be performed, meaning vital diagnoses may be missed or delayed.

👉 Do not enable full and effective cleaning of the critical sub-gingival areas.

👉 May actually cause damage to the tissues surrounding the teeth.

👉 May cause discomfort, pain, and/or distress to the animal.

👉 Are likely to delay clients from accessing effective, proper oral care.

👉 If performed under the guise of a “dental treatment,” could be considered misleading unless pet owners are made fully aware of the inadequate and potentially harmful nature of the procedure.
