Meet Milo, the Mini Poodle whose fancy footwork landed him in the OR!

Milo’s owner, Kate, knew her 4-year-old fluffball was a drama king – those twirls for treats were Oscar-worthy🐶. But lately, he’d been holding up one back leg mid-spin, refusing to put it down, like he was staging a tiny protest. At first, Kate thought he’d tweaked it chasing his tail, but when he started yelping and skipping every other step, she brought him in. A quick knee check showed his patella was practically a runaway train – grade 4 patellar luxation, on both legs. Milo’s kneecaps were sliding out of their groove and staying out, no popping back in sight.

👉 What’s the deal: Patellar luxation is when the kneecap (patella) ditches its spot in the femur’s trochlear groove. For Milo, it was medial luxation – shifting inward – super common in Mini Poodles and other small pups. Left alone, this could mea chronic pain, shredded cartilage, and early arthritis – not the vibe for a poodle with places to prance.

👉 Why it went unnoticed: Milo’s a trooper – dogs mask discomfort like champs. That leg lift looked more sassy than serious until it wasn’t.
