Quýt underwent root canal treatment on her both upper canines. She felt immediately better, the pain was gone, she was eating like champ and she was able to keep the canines!

Fractures can occur when chewing on hard items, play or fight with another animal or fall from heights.

Every broken tooth needs to be examined by a veterinarian, they can be very painful and untreated fractures can lead to complications.

Fractured teeth without pulp exposure will have exposed dentin – which in most cases can be treated by restoration with bonded sealant or composite. Exposed dentin will cause sensitivity, and the pulp may even die without direct pulp exposure.

Fractured teeth with pulp exposure will lose vitality and can abscess. This painful process may not be visible without X-ray. Any adult tooth with pulp exposure should be treated with root canal therapy or surgical extraction before it has a chance to abscess.

Fractured deciduous (baby teeth) with pulp exposure should be extracted to prevent damage to the underlying adult tooth.

Every fractured tooth should be evaluated with diagnostic imaging to determine the best treatment option. Depending on the complexity of the fracture the options are: extraction, root canal or restoration. Wait and see is not an option!
